Welcome to the Raleigh Coin Club's young numismatist section.
First, what is a numismatist? Well it's a fancy word, hard to pronounce for the beginning collector, that simply describes a collector of coins, currency, tokens, medals as well as other related material. So, what is a young numismatist (YN)? The American Numismatic Association, the national organization for the hobby, defines a young numismatist as "collectors ages 5 to 17." While this section of the Raleigh Coin Club site is geared to those young numismatist, we hope beginning collectors of all ages will also find these pages useful.
Our young collectors group, known as the "Coin Hawks," meets at 6:30PM prior to the regular Raleigh Coin Club meeting every month except December. Our goal is to have fun with coins and learn - learn about coins and currency, learn about the history associated with our money, and learn how to properly and safely handle and protect our coins. Meeting topics differ from month and we let the curiosity of the members guide us into new areas of collective interest. The Coin Hawks are always looking for new members, so come to a meeting sometime and join in the fun.
The regular Raleigh Coin Club meeting starts at 7:30PM right after the Coin Hawks meeting. Members of the Coin Hawks are always welcome to stay for the regular meeting. The meeting features show and tell where many interesting and rare coins have been known to circulate through the audience. And, the meeting is capped off with a presentation, while many are of advanced collecting topics, all are very interesting and informative.
